The Story

I spent well over a year out of the studio for a variety of reasons. In early 2010, I bought an open back banjo after having been intrigued by the way Sufjan Stevens was using it in his amazing work. I quickly fell in love with the instrument and began digging deeper into its roots until I discovered the wonderful world of Old-Time music. I spent months listening almost exclusively to Old-Time banjo music and diligently teaching myself how to play from Dan Levenson’s excellent book “Clawhammer from Scratch”.

Some months later, my parents’ bestowed on me a stunning gift: a custom built banjo by master Patrick “Doc” Huff. Within a week of receiving the instrument, I began writing with it, ending my long hiatus from writing music.

This, my first solo banjo piece, is a celebration of the life of my wife’s grandfather, Sandy Kirkwood.
